Position: Information Technology Manager

Date of Hire: 3/10/14

Favorite Story / Memory during Time Working at Team 1: Josh said that his favorite memory was the Community Open House that Team 1 held in May 2016. Many of the Team Members, including Josh, invited their families to see where they worked and to tour the plant. “I took my son, Peyton, through the plant to see the machines and how they worked. I pointed out some of the stuff that I’ve worked on and what I’ve done. It was fun to be able to bring him in to see the plant.”

How has Team 1 helped your Personal and/or Professional Development? It’s the wide range of his job responsibilities at Team 1 that Josh said has contributed the most to his professional development. “I get to wear a lot of hats here. I get to work on everything from servers to security, SQL, to email, to mobility, and programming in all those different areas. I think that’s made me better overall.”

He also said that being the manager of the IT department has helped him grow. “I run my entire department, but I’m not isolated to just IT. I have a say in the bigger things of the company, and that’s grown me more as a leader.”

Favorite Aspect of Working at Team 1: Josh said that his favorite aspect of working at Team 1, besides vacation time, is “the fact that Team 1 is a small company.” He explained that his two prior employers were large corporations where he felt like “just a cog in a wheel.  No one really knows you beyond a couple of managers. Even if they have met you before, they don’t remember you the next time they come around.” He said that “it is nice to get back to a small company with its flexibility and the personal relationships. I feel like I actually know my bosses, and they know a little bit about me. I really enjoy a small company.”

What do you want to share about your life outside of Team 1?  Josh is married to Lauren, and they have two sons, Peyton (age 7) and Bentley (age 4). “When I’m not at Team 1, I’m with them. We’re doing what the boys want to do; they’ve always got something they’re involved with, such as soccer. So, following the boys around and watching them grow up is how I spend most of my time when I’m not at Team 1.” As the IT Manager, Josh is always “on call” unless the plant is shut down, but he said that “I don’t get called in a ridiculous amount — the balance is pretty good. I don’t feel it affects me being a husband and a dad or being myself outside of Team 1.”

Piece of Advice and/or Encouragement for Future Team 1 Team Members: Josh said that the valuable employees and ones who get promoted are those don’t just point out problems, but who occasionally find or suggest solutions. He explained, “A company always has employees who can point out problems. You are never going to be in short supply of people to point out problems, but the valuable ones can also offer solutions. Gary and Craig don’t just want us to find the problems. They want us to say, “Hey, I found this problem. Here’s the solution. I’ve already implemented it,’ and they don’t have to deal with it.”

Random Question:  What is the greatest Invention of all time? “Being a true IT guy,” Josh said, “I googled it!” He said that he wanted to see what other people had on their list. He found that most people had similar answers — the printing press was the dominant answer. But, Josh had his own idea – the airplane. “I’ve always thought the airplane is just amazing. You can put a plane in water, and it sinks, but this big, heavy, steel tube is flying over our heads all the time. It’s just bizarre!”
