Team 1 Plastics’ Response to Covid-19

Although the world has changed much in the last month, some things remain the same. Team 1 Plastics, a plastic injection molding company for the mobility industry, continues to be focused on two of its top priorities. The first priority is always the safety and health of its Team Members. The second priority is to make sure the company is meeting all “essential” customer requests.

Under the Executive Order, “Stay Home, Stay Safe,” issued by Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer on March 23, 2020, Team 1 Plastics has been designated as an “essential supplier” by most of its customers. Therefore, the company is working on any production orders and onsite engineering and launch activities from these designated customers.

But, it is definitely not “business as usual” inside Team 1’s facility as the company strives to keep its Team Members safe. Only minimal staffing is brought in to produce and ship “essential” customer orders or to work on onsite engineering and launch activities. Team Members not directly involved in production, distribution, or engineering are working from home. For those unable to work from home, Team 1 is following the CDC guidelines with an emphasis on social distancing, and all health safety measures have been implemented.

“As a company, a community, and a country, we will all need to work together to battle this pandemic,” wrote Gary Grigowski, Co-owner and Vice President for Team 1 Plastics. “As a country, we will survive this just as we did with prior pandemics, a civil war, world wars, recessions, depressions, and terrorist attacks. As a company, we will survive this just as we did with the financial crisis and the tsunami.”

Lessons learned and measures implemented by Team 1 during both the 2008 recession and the 2011 Japanese tsunami are valuable tools for the company as the Owners and Management Team make day-by-day decisions during the ever-changing response to the COVID-19 virus. Fortunately, Team 1 had been improving its operations over the last several years through continuous improvement and had optimized the company to be very lean and extremely efficient. In the first two months of 2020, prior to the COVID-19 virus crisis, the company experienced robust profits due to strong orders and solid quality, delivery, and overall company performance.

Also, no government assistance programs were available in either 2008 or 2011. With the recent passage of several state and federal small business assistance programs, Team 1 will take full advantage of all available government resources to bridge this gap until things return to normal. A key objective will be to maintain its Team through these difficult times. Team 1 wants to be prepared to quickly reestablish its stellar performance once the Executive Order, “Stay Home, Stay Safe,” is lifted, and orders begin to return to past levels.
Team 1 wants to make sure all “essential customers” realize that Team 1 Plastics can meet their needs at any time, and the company will maintain its extremely high level of customer service throughout this COVID-19 virus event.

“We sincerely hope this pandemic passes quickly with as little loss of life as possible,” wrote Grigowski. “We also hope that sales will bounce back as quickly as possible so that Team 1 can … continue along the successful path we were on just a few short weeks ago.”
