Department Profile – Sales and Marketing Department

Team 1 Plastics, a plastic injection molding company for the transportation industry, believes that “Building an exceptional company is the result of building exceptional teams with exceptional people.” Today continues a series of articles profiling Team 1 Plastics’ teams – its Departments. Meet the Sales and Marketing Department.

Name of Department: Sales and Marketing Department

The Sales & Marketing Department currently consists of four Team Members. Craig Carrel, President of Team 1 Plastics leads the Sales Team. Other members include Dave Biondo, Sales Development Manager, Michele Warner, Estimator, and Donn Briskie, Sales Support. In addition, the department is supplemented with a part-time contractor serving as a Marketing Assistant. The Team is hoping to grow in the near future as it is currently looking to add another Sales Development position.

How does your Department support Team 1’s Customers? Carrel said, “We are the ‘voice’ of the customers at Team 1. We interact with all our customers’ departments — especially their purchasing teams. We relay any concerns, problems, opportunities, and positive feedback from the customers to our internal Team.” The Sales & Marketing Team receives the customers RFQs (Requests for Quotation) and are responsible for turning around accurate and timely quotes to secure new business. “Our marketing efforts develop the Team 1 Plastics brand and allow our current and future customers to understand our capabilities and how we can help them save both time and money.”

How does your Department support Team 1? Carrel said, “We obtain and maintain all of the company’s sales and are constantly focused on profitable growth to meet Team 1’s long-term financial goals. In addition, we communicate our customers’ needs and wants internally so that we can meet their expectations. We are the point of the spear that allows Team 1 to strive to be our customers’ #1 Team In Customer Satisfaction.”

Describe a typical work day in your Department. Although every day is different for the Sales and Marketing Team, there are some routines. The Team Members receive lots of emails and phone calls from customers which are often time sensitive. Responsiveness is the key and requires prioritizing tasks to keep the flow of information moving forward to meet the customers’ deadlines. Much of the day is spent working on RFQs. Other typical tasks include meeting with customers, updating sales reports, reviewing contracts/purchase orders, and forecasting future sales. And, each week, a news article or Plastics Pipeline blog is published on the company’s website and social media outlets.

Share an example of a problem/challenge that your Department encountered and how you solved it. Carrel said that Team 1 had two customers request substantial financial credits due to a quality reject and a new part launch. “In both cases, we worked internally to meet these special requests even though in both requests, it was definitely questionable whether Team 1 was totally responsible.” Carrel explained why Team 1 agreed to the requests. “We have strong relationships with both customers and decided to meet their needs to demonstrate the partnership between our companies and our strategic relationship in order to be able to continue to grow our business together.”

What is One Noteworthy Accomplishment by your Department in the recent past? Carrel said that the department has become much more organized and systematic in its sales approach. The team meets twice a month to review key metrics and to determine how to allocate resources to grow profitability. In addition, the team is now sharing its sales objectives twice a year internally so everyone understands their priorities.

What are the Current Goals for your Department? Carrel simply stated, “To profitably grow the company’s sales.”

What does your Department take pride in? “How everyone at Team 1 is focused on customer satisfaction — it is a total team effort. It makes it easy to sell Team 1 with this type of support.”

To protect the Team Members, we’ll not share which phobia each Team Member admitted to having. However, we will share this comment about the fear of snakes. “I would definitely avoid an area if I knew snakes were there. It’s not that I’m terrified but just don’t want to risk it if I can avoid it.”
