Profile of Team Member – Jadon Austin
Team 1 Plastics, a plastic injection molding company for the mobility industry, believes that “Building an exceptional company is the result of building exceptional teams with exceptional people.” Team 1 has been and continues to be a successful company because of exceptional people – its Team Members. Today continues a series of articles profiling Team 1 Plastics’ Team Members. Each month, you’ll be introduced to one of these exceptional Team Members, including Jadon Austin.
Name: Jadon Austin
Position: Tool Maintenance Specialist
Date of Hire: 4/20/15
Other Positions Held / Length of Each: Jadon joined Team 1 Plastics while still in high school and had a unique on-boarding experience. For five months, he rotated through several departments, including Assembly, Production, Maintenance, Engineering, and Quality, spending a few days to a few weeks at each position to see what aspects of manufacturing he liked. When he finished the rotation, he was allowed to select which department he wanted to work in, and he chose Maintenance.
Favorite Story / Memory during Time Working at Team 1: Jadon said that one of the best things that has happened to him during his time at Team 1 Plastics is seeing his ideas for improvement put into production and make a positive impact on the company. He recalled that the cutting fixture used on mold 2161 was ineffective. “I was talking with a couple of people about how the design on the old cutting fixture was not a very good way to do it.” Laughing, he added, “I somehow got wrapped up into designing one, and then I built it.” Not only did he build it, but it’s been in place for several months and hasn’t failed yet, saving the company both time and money in reducing sorting costs and rework. “Designing things that were built and put into production that help the company save money is something that makes me feel good about the things that I’ve done.”
How has Team 1 helped your Personal and/or Professional Development? “Schooling!” Jadon is currently attending Kellogg Community College’s RMTC (Regional Manufacturing Technology Center) in Battle Creek, Michigan. He is working on an Associate’s Degree in Applied Sciences as well as two Certificate programs: Machining and Skilled Trades. Team 1 not only allows him to have a flexible work schedule to accommodate his class schedule, they also pay for the classes through a tuition reimbursement program.
Favorite Aspect of Working at Team 1: It’s Jadon co-workers which are his favorite aspect of working at Team 1. He said, “Every day I come in to work, I enjoy being here because the people I work with closely are fun to be around. They are very smart people so we exchange ideas a lot, and we all just kinda grow off of each other. And, they are good people to work around. It makes work a more enjoyable place to be.”
What do you want to share about your life outside of Team 1? Four months ago, Jadon’s life changed dramatically when he welcomed a baby boy into his family. So, his life now consists mostly of family, school, and work. Jadon also coaches wrestling for Marshall High School – something he’s been doing since 2016.
Piece of Advice and/or Encouragement for Future Team 1 Team Members: Jadon’ advice is two-fold. First, “Take advantage of the tuition reimbursement program. When you go to school, you learn a lot about a lot of things that help you out professionally.” Second, “Show up to work, and do your best.”
Random Question: Who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman? “Spiderman,” Jadon replied emphatically, “because he actually has super powers!”
