Team 1 Plastics Presented with Commemorative Flag
In a brief ceremony on Monday, May 13, 2019, Team 1 Plastics was presented with a commemorative flag and certificate by Staff Sergeant Geoffrey Martin in appreciation of the support that he received through Red Shirt Fridays while serving in Afghanistan this past winter.
Red Shirt Fridays was the idea of Craig Clem, a Tool Maintenance Specialist at Team 1 Plastics. He began wearing red shirts on Fridays as a way to honor and support his friend, Airman Martin. Clem would take a picture of himself in his red shirt, write a short note, and send the picture to Martin.
After a few weeks of this, Clem asked his co-workers to join him. Many Team Members from Team 1 Plastics began wearing red shirts on Friday and taking a group picture under the large American flag in Team 1’s plant.
Martin said that the pictures made a difference. “I looked forward to my Friday picture. It was awesome that people are thinking about you every week because trust me, there’s days when you’re over there and you’re wondering, ‘Why am I here? This place sucks!’”
SSgt Martin is an Aircrew Flight Equipment (AFE) Technician in the 171st Air Refueling Squadron Unit of the United States Air Force, based at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. He shared the pictures with his unit and told them about the support he was receiving from his friend, Craig Clem, and Craig’s fellow Team Members. Martin said that he wanted to do something to show his appreciation for their support. They decided that they would present Team 1 Plastics with a United States flag that was flown during one of the squadron’s missions.
According to the certificate,
On 03 March 2019, this flag was flown by the 340th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron, Kandahar, Afghanistan, aboard a KC-135R StratoTanker TAIL #58-0062, during combat operations in support of Operation RESOLUTE SUPPORT and the Global War on Terrorism. During this mission the crew offladed 12,200 pounds of fuel to three USAF F-16s, directly contributing to strategic strikes against enemy forces in the area of responsibility. Let all who look upon this banner see a symbol of freedom, a standard of justice, and a promise to remember those that have sacrificed for it.
At the bottom of the certificate is a quote by President George W. Bush, “”We will not tire; we will not falter; we will not fail; Peace and Freedom will Prevail.” The certificate is signed by Adam Thieroff, Capt, USAF Pilot, Alex Begue, Capt, USAF Co-Pilot, and Andrew Keepers, SSgt, USAF Boom Operator.
In accepting the flag and certificate, Craig Carrel, Co-owner and President of Team 1 Plastics, said, “We appreciate this. It was very, very unexpected and a nice surprise. It’s such an honor, and we’ll display it with pride.”
Attending the ceremony with Airman Martin were his mother and his daughter. Representing Team 1 were Craig Clem, Craig Carrel, Gary Grigowski, Co-Owner and Vice President, and Robert Clothier, Human Resources Manager.
